There has long been the realization that Mentoring is a key development activity that may not be equally available to all populations in the workplace. Formal Mentoring Programs provide an opportunity for employers to further their diversity goals by bringing more people together as mentoring partners who might not otherwise be inclined to do so. Formal programs have the capacity to enlist, match, train and provide support to a large percentage of the workforce whether they are in different business units, regions of the company or parts of the world.

Programs abound that cover the areas of leadership development and talent management. Yet few examine the specifics of what it takes to actually create more diversity in the leadership ranks.
This webinar will take participants through the major steps of designing a Strategic Initiative for creating diversity in their organization’s leadership pipeline. The outcome of the design process will be a roadmap that identifies the key components of a Glass Ceiling and make recommendations for change. A set of recommended training and development processes will be provided to show how the leadership competencies of the under-utilized talent pool of potential leaders and their current management can be enhanced.
Webinar 3: Mentoring Across the Glass Ceiling: Establishing the Leadership Dialogue
Thursday – April 17, 2008,
1:00 p.m. CST, 60 minutes

The Glass Ceiling is not a one-stop barrier but a series of small derailments that occur in a person’s career. The Glass Ceiling is an outcome of organizational processes, stereotypes, the comfort zones of those in leadership, and development gaps of those aspiring to be leaders. Mentoring is a key development process for current and future leaders. Without the information and relationships provided in a mentoring partnership, aspiring diverse candidates cannot obtain the positive visibility, grooming for upward mobility and sponsorship to move into the upper ranks.
This webinar will address these issues and show how to develop and strengthen the dialogues with leadership to produce successful mentoring outcomes.

This program is designed to assist managers and mentors to become more proficient in handling two key and critical components of diversity management– providing feedback and coaching to their direct reports and mentees who are different. A number of studies have found that supervisors and managers claim discomfort and fear complaints and lawsuits when providing feedback across differences. They tend therefore to ignore and/or bypass this critically important aspect of their managerial responsibility.
This practice is both a disservice to the employee and the company. Without honest and timely feedback from managers, employees cannot know their strengths and development needs and are therefore hampered in creating a professional growth strategy. When employees are not assisted to realize their full potential through mentoring, the employer loses in terms of engagement level, professional competency and productivity.
Through the use of case studies and simulation exercises, managers and mentors will learn how to recognize their unrealistic fears and stereotypes regarding feedback and coaching. They will learn a success model that will guide them to be a more effective at their development tasks.
This program is designed for all levels of Supervision, Management and Mentors and professionals in the diversity management, training and human resources functions.

Some researchers have “guestimated” that as much as 80% of the workforce is still not enjoying the benefits of mentoring. The process of mentoring is greatly underutilized because access is limited. This limitation is compounded by the emerging problem of an increasing need for growth and development.
The solution for this limited availability of mentoring is to offer mentoring programs in a variety of formats. Although many companies already have mentoring in informal, formal and group formats, the need continues to outweigh availability. A new format holds great promise for engaging more of the workforce without substantial administration and associated costs.
This hybrid format combines the best features of informal mentoring and formal mentoring programs. This hybrid program, The Mentoring Bridge©, provides participants with information, methods and tools to enable anyone to start and sustain a mentoring partnership.
The Mentoring Bridge© is a self-managed mentoring program. This program is ideal for those who want to establish a partnership on their own.
The Mentoring Bridge expands the benefits of mentoring to a much larger percentage of the workforce through a number of channels – through workplace programs and through professional associations. Combined with other types of mentoring, this program can quickly reach enough employees and managers to create a mentoring culture – one in which timely and incidental mentoring becomes the norm rather than the exception

Why do Best-in-Class diversity programs have a mentoring component? Research has shown that in most organizations, informal mentoring does not extend across lines of cultural difference, geographic boundaries, and business venues. Without a proven methodology to expand the opportunities for mentoring, the dialogues that are essential for growth and leadership development cannot take place. In this workshop, participants will hear from consultants and mentoring program participants on how to create and upgrade mentoring formats to enhance diversity goals and objectives. The critical issues for achieving inclusion and equity through mentoring will be examined and discussed.
